Project - Study on the breadth of human gene patents granted by the CIPO and other patent offices
Client - Canadian Biotechnology Secretariat (CBS)
Description - The Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee (CBAC) is undertaking research and consultation on the impacts and implications of intellectual property protection in relation to human genetic inventions for research and health care. CBAC mandated Science-Metrix to undertake a study reviewing the background information necessary to address this sensitive issue.
This review involves the examination and the determination of the nature and breadth of human gene patents granted by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), and other patent offices such as the United States Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the European Patent Office (EPO). Science-Metrix has specifically examined the breadth of a sample of patents granted in Canada, the US, and Europe through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) using qualitative methods and has conducted telephone interviews with experts including patents examiners, patent lawyers and inventors, with knowledge about CIPO, USPTO and EPO.
