POTENTIAL OF PHARMACOGENOMICS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN CANADA

Project - Study on the scientific and technological potential of pharmacogenomics in Canada
Client - Canadian Biotechnology Secretariat (CBS)

Description - The Canadian Biotechnology Secretariat (CBS) commissioned Science-Metrix and Michel Noiseux Bio-Conseil (MNBC) to evaluate the potential of Canadian pharmacogenomics science and technology. This study provided background material for the CBS’ Biotechnology Health Innovation Working Group (BHI). In particular, it facilitated senior managers’ evaluation of the potential for development of pharmacogenomics technology.

Science-Metrix gave an overview of the Canadian situation based on a scientific and technical literature review, interviews with key players in the field and the results of scientometric and technometric analyses. Science-Metrix then provided recommendations on the amount of funding that should be made available and the intensity of R&D activities that should be conducted in the field in order to maximize the benefits for Canadians. Apart from federal public management recommendations, the report also suggests strategies for knowledge transfer into clinical and commercial applications.

The report’s recommendations spring from an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) which takes into account the following aspects of research on pharmacogenomics: the state of R&D in Canada, international trends, predicted market needs, the shortcomings of R&D in Canada, barriers to the development of R&D, the niches and specialties offering specific opportunities and the ethical questions related to R&D and commercial applications.
