Project - Bibliometric Analysis of Research on
Mental Health in the Workplace in Canada, 1991-2002
Client - Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA-CIHR)
Description - The Institute of Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) called upon the joint expertise of Science-Metrix and the CIRST to perform an analysis of research in the field of mental health in the workplace from 1991 to 2002.
Science-Metrix compared Canadian scientific output in this field to the world’s output. Analysis was also conducted at the national level, by provinces, cities, institutions and researchers. Data collected from the Medline database on scientific publications were used to compute the following scientometric indicators: number of papers, number of papers per capita and specialization index.
The results show that scientific papers on mental health in the workplace represent only 0.2% of all publications in biomedical sciences – the research is therefore still a niche interest. Despite this, scientific output in this area doubled on the international level and tripled in Canada over the past twelve years. In Canada, Ontario takes the lead well ahead of the other provinces in terms of both absolute and relative scientific output. Other important players in absolute terms are Quebec, British-Columbia and Alberta and, in relative terms, Manitoba and Nova Scotia. Toronto and Montreal are the most productive cities. The Universities of British Columbia, Toronto and Western Ontario, McMaster University and l’Université de Montréal occupy equal positions.
This study have been used by the Working Group mandated by INMHA in Establishing a Long-Term Agenda for Workplace Mental Health Research. For more information, see the report on the Working Group (July 2004) >>>
