Description - The Fonds de recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQRNT) commissioned a research team from CIRST and Science-Metrix to identify which of the grant programs created to support innovative and interdisciplinary research initiatives could lead to the emergence of new poles of excellence. Specifically, this study aimed to identify new operational structures and selection mechanisms set up by the main governmental and private funding agencies around the world.
Thirteen funding programs from eleven funding agencies are presented and analyzed in the report. They differ from traditional funding programs in their objectives, admission criteria and administrative flexibility. However, the report shows that the selection procedures for most of these programs are no different from those of traditional programs; they are essentially based on a peer review process.
