The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) recently released a document entitled "Bibliometric Analysis of Research Contributing to Animal Health Risk Assessment" in support of the Expert Panel on Approaches to Animal Health Risk Assessment’s report: Healthy Animals, Healthy Canada. The bibliometric analysis was conducted by Science-Metrix for the CCA.

The bibliometric analysis was performed using two sets of peer-reviewed papers: the first set focused on animal health risk assessment science (AHRAS) and the second set on human health consequences of animal health events (HHCAHE). To allow a very precise analysis of the different topics within each research area, these two sets were further divided in the following subtopics:

AHRAS

  • Diagnostic test evaluation
  • Economic models of consequences
  • Disease frequency
  • Epidemiology (natural history) of disease / pathogen
  • Epidemiology (risk factors) of disease / pathogen
  • Evaluation of surveillance systems for the disease / pathogen

HHCAHE

  • Detection of animal-human pathogens
  • Frequency of zoonotic pathogens in animals and humans
  • Animal diseases with human impact
  • Psycho-social consequences of management of animal health events
  • Animal-human disease transmission
  • Zoonotic diseases

The bibliometric study shows that the Canadian scientific output in these fields compares reasonably well with the output of many countries. For example, compared to other major agricultural producers, Canada generates a large volume of high-quality scientific papers relative to the size of its livestock industries. In general, however, the bibliometric data suggest that, in Canada, this research tends to be less intensive (as a proportion of total scientific output) and have less relative impact (measured by average relative citations) than that produced by leading countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium.
